Containment first
Scraping ceilings makes a lot of dust. The room gets sealed off with plastic and the floor gets fully covered before a scraper touches anything.
Smooth or matched texture
Once the popcorn is off, the ceiling can be skimmed perfectly smooth or given a light texture to match the rest of the house. Smooth shows every flaw, so it also takes more finishing.
Water stains need sealing
An old leak mark bleeds straight through normal paint. Those areas get a stain-blocking primer first — and if the source is still live, that gets fixed before we coat it.
Ceilings are painted as one plane
Spot-painting a ceiling almost always flashes. The whole plane is coated corner to corner so the sheen is even under every light in the room.

Does popcorn ceiling contain asbestos?
Textured ceilings installed before the early 1980s can. If your home is from that era the material should be tested before anyone scrapes it, and asbestos-containing texture must be handled by a licensed abatement contractor, not a painter.
How messy is popcorn removal?
It is a dusty job, which is why containment matters. The room is sealed and covered, and the debris is bagged and removed rather than swept around the house.
Do I have to leave the house?
Usually not. The work area is sealed off, so most people stay and simply keep out of the room being worked on.
Should the ceiling be smooth or re-textured?
Smooth reads modern and reflects light well but shows every imperfection, so it needs more finishing work. A light matched texture is more forgiving and blends with the rest of an older house.
Can you just paint over popcorn instead of removing it?
It can be painted, and sometimes that is the right call on a budget. Be aware that painting locks the texture in and makes future removal harder, because saturated texture is much tougher to scrape.
Will you fix the cracks and seams up there too?
Yes. Once the texture is off, the seams and cracks underneath are taped and finished before the ceiling is primed and painted.
